Country Living

March29

One of the benefits of country living, is that your kids get to see new baby animals on occasion! Like a couple of weeks ago when our neighbors who keep miniature horses in the barn next door invited us to come over and see their newest addition! Her name is Valentina and she was born the day after Valentine’s Day. Her Mama was still VERY protective of her! When it came time to go into the barn little Valentina was NOT ready to go, but after quite a bit of chasing, slipping, and sliding, our neighbor just picked her up and carried her inside. The Mom was only about as tall as Burke! So sweet.

“Firsts” Tag

March17

I’m responding to my friend Elaine’s fun game of Blog Tag:

 1. Who was your FIRST prom date? James something-or-other. Winter Ball/Junior Prom. Cute Hawaiian kid. Could never marry me because I’m not Hawaiian. *sigh* OK, truth to tell, he was cute, but I didn’t know him that well and I felt so stinkin’ awkward the whole time. I was used to Susanvillian affairs where everyone knows everyone, and yeah, you have a "date" but you mingle and dance with all your friends. Apparently this was taboo in my new culture and he was really irritated that I kept wanting to dance with other guys… go figure.

2. Do you still talk to your FIRST love? Every day. I had lots of crushes, but I wouldn’t say I was really in love until Conan and I got together.

3. What was your FIRST alcoholic drink? Red wine at my neighbor Christie Churchill’s house in I think second grade? She told us it was grape juice.

4. What was your FIRST job? The Levi’s Outlet at the Folsom Mall in California. I still have nightmares of folding walls and walls of jeans… but I really did enjoy the people.

5. What was your FIRST car? The Pumpkin Truck. No idea what vintage, but a Ford Ranger pickup truck that used to be used by the Forest Rangers I believe. The logo was peeled off, the hood was black, and the tailgate was warped, but it had a cattle guard and it cost about $200. And it ran very smoothly. My dad is a Magician, that’s all I know.

6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today? I’m not really a texting kinda gal.

7. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning? Keane. He’s been wandering the house at night lately and he actually stayed put last night, hooray!

8. Who was your FIRST grade teacher? Mrs. Hite– she was so great!

9. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane? To Puerto Vallarta Mexico on our first ever family vacation (well first one that wasn’t also a business trip). I was 17 and paid my own way.

10. Who was your First best friend, and are you still friends today? My twin sister Elizabeth– is that cheating? And yeah, we are definitely still friends!

11. What was your FIRST sport played? Does kissing tag count? I kinda changed the rules into kicking tag, but still… okay, okay… I think it was basketball. Or maybe track. I was in sixth grade.

12. Where was your FIRST sleep over? I think it was probably Rollie Foltz’s house. I have a lot of fond memories of freezing the underwear of whoever fell asleep first (totally NOT my idea, but I was SO not going to be the first out!), playing sardines, and telling ghost stories.

13. Who was the FIRST person you talked to today? Conan. "Is that your alarm or mine?"

14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning? Took a shower with Conan. It’s a daily ritual. We’re crazy like that.

15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to? They Might be Giants. It was a Christmas gift from my brother… how cool is that!?

16. FIRST tattoo or piercing? I had my ear pierced when I was five or six. That’s pretty much it. Oh I did pretend to be rebellious and got an extra hole in one ear, but my mom really didn’t care one way or the other. I guess she just felt I needed to feel I had jumped that hoop.

17. FIRST foreign country you went to? Mexico, as mentioned. I’ve also spent four months in China, and I’m about to visit Italy! Woohoo!

18. What was your FIRST run in with the law? Um, never.

19. When was your FIRST detention? I never got put in detention. Unless you count when I had to sit on "the bench" during recess in Kindergarten because I was really mean to Christie Bill and wouldn’t let her off the teeter totter.

20. What was the FIRST state you lived in? California.

21. Who was the FIRST person to break your heart? Conan, actually. But then he asked me to marry him so I guess I’ll forgive him.

22. Who was your FIRST roommate? Again, my twin Liz. We were Womb-mates for starters (oh heck I couldn’t stop myself) then at college… actually she’s the only roommate I’ve ever had aside from Conan! There were other girls in the apartment, but I’d never shared a room with anyone but her.

Hooray for Ramen!

March12

Ramen Site.png

So, I just found this great website totally dedicated to Ramen Noodle Recipes.Yup. That cheap 10 cent a package delicacy college students (and other folks on a budget) depend on for survival. But with these great recipes? Heck, I think I’d even eat Ramen cuz I want to. There are many other sites dedicated to Ramen, of course, but this one’s the best.

Zeldaboy’s Stuff

March9

ZeldaTwilight_char01.jpg

This is a post all about Neils’ obsession with Zelda. Nevermind that the hero in the Zelda games is not named Zelda, that name just sounds way cooler than "Link" so he is ZELDA. Pretty much every day.

Time Out for Women

March7

Time Out for Women is AWESOME. It wasn’t the "Pep Rally" feel the sister in our ward who made this great trip happen expected it to be, but still a wonderful weekend. Highlights for me:

Eating Out (including Buffalo Wings at Applebee’s and some AWESOME BBQ at a Foodnetwork featured restaurant called "Smoque")

Talking to women all weekend

Playing Apples to Apples and some Dice Game that starts with a P until late at night

Sitting a row or two behind amazing and inspirational people like Chieko Okazaki, Jane Clayson, and Michael McLean

Listening to wonderful speakers and musicians (including the above and Cherie Call, Hilary Weeks, and Elia Gorgouris

100_2049.JPG   100_2056.JPG     100_2053.JPG

Chicago Skyline              Some of the fabulous Speakers   Elaine and I with Michael

Some of the major takeaways for me:

I am a Home Maker not a House Keeper

Jesus is as close as we let Him be

Service is something we can do as a family more often than we think

Many struggle with depression, some use art to create beauty and inspiration from their challenges, and so can I

Life is too good to be stuck trying to find all that’s wrong with it.
