The simple motor
Last week I read Neils one of the magic school bus books (his favorite book series), and did the science experiment at the end. The topic was boyancy, so we had lots of fun with play dough and water. After things started to get a little out of hand. I suggested that we try another “science experiment.”
“Yes! Yes! I love science experiements,” Neils exclamed emphatically, jumping up and down (lots). “Let’s do some more!”
“OK.” I replied, thinking of what else might be interesting and somewhat relevant. “Ah! I know. Let’s make a motor.”
After a bit of searching, I finially found the Howtoons comic I was looking for, as well as other instructions for a similar one. Then off we went in search of wire (which we had to extract from an old telephone line), a battery, and some magnets (no problem there thanks to Eric, April, & co.).
Here is the result:

We also have an exclusive interview with Neils explaining how the thing works. (It’s a big file – 14MB)
